Achievement Motivation in Workplace Thinking

Achievement motivation as a socio-psychological construct demands twenty-first-century workforce to be inspired for excellence and accomplishment, creating a productive and healthy work environment. This workplace thinking of the desire to excel empowers the performance aspiration among the personnel to achieve sustainable professional goals. With the pressing need post-pandemic to retain a productive workforce, the retail store managers contemplate ways and mean to actuate better job performance among retail store frontline employees. This study primarily explores the relationship between achievement motivation and job performance. Moreover, retail store managers introduce certain performance aspiration indicators, say incentive rewards for better performance of the customer-facing frontline staff. But these short-term rewards will not be sufficient to retain a productive workforce that contributes to the firm's long-term value. This chapter focuses on achievement motivation theories to investigate the role of achievement motivation variables, with specific reference to intrinsic and extrinsic thinking, that are employed by managers to stimulate positive job performance among the employees of a retail firm. This chapter aims to provide scholarly and managerial contributions that could increase retail frontline staff productivity, leading to a better employee retention rate in the long run.
