Role of Direct and Indirect Thinking Strategies in Developing ESL Learners’ English Speaking Skill
摘要
Speaking serves as a tool for the expression of human thinking. Thinking ability of an individual is determined by how well one can communicate the thought process for better comprehension. Speaking involves willing to communicate with and the intention to be understood by receiver. It requires relevant thinking skills to be applied to plan the communication of ideas and thoughts in second language. In second language classroom, learners face constraints in speaking, due to the lack of experience in converting their thought into words. Effective speaking happens when ideas and their expressions are articulated in an appropriate way. It involves various thinking strategies for fluent communication in second language. These strategies directly or indirectly employed by the learners while performing the speaking tasks. Thus, this paper explores how direct thinking strategies enhance the speaking skill by enabling the learners to be more conscious of their thought process. It also explicates how indirect thinking strategies enable the learners to overcome the obstacles that hinder their thinking for English speaking. The study suggests the teachers to make the learners to be aware of their own thinking processes involved in speaking for sustainable improvement.
