Improving ESL Learners’ Lateral Thinking Skill Through Writing Tasks
摘要
The ability to think laterally involves the evolving of innovative concepts using unconventional methods to address a situation. It is essential for the second language learners to be a lateral thinker in the second language classroom, in order to face the challenges of comprehensive writing tasks. As thinking and writing are integrated, lateral thinking facilitates in generating content pertaining to new patterns and innovative ideas. Developing the students’ lateral thinking ability activates their cognitive domain for association of thought and ideas to ease content generation and comprehensive writing skills. In this line, the tasks administered among ESL learners capacitate lateral thinking ability among students, to form cohesive and extensive content without any hindrance in their writing. Consequently, implementing the lateral thinking tasks and strategies will enhance the students’ thought process and logical progression of ideas, resulting in coherent content generation, resulting in effective writing skills. This assists the learners to adopt and form an independent content generation mechanism in their writing process. Moreover, the study aims to ascertain the relation between the lateral thinking skills and content generation of the ESL students.
