Impact of Integrative Thinking and Positive Language Transfer
摘要
Integrative thinking fosters problem solving and decision-making process while encountering the challenging situation. It helps to analyse how each aspect of problem affects one another and finally find the solution for the whole. In this line, this chapter examines how language and cognition participate in integrative thinking in creating metalinguistic awareness for positive language transfer in second language learning. Language transfer is a problem solving and decision-making activity happens due to the interaction between the target language and the first language. In the process of second language learning, learners consciously or unconsciously use first language problem solving skills to comprehend the second language structures. Language transfer takes place automatically when the language cognitive mechanism finds the commonness of human cognition in language production. It creates meta-awareness and enables the learners to transfer the requisite knowledge and skills from their first language to second language. Their first language thinking interacts with second language structures looking for the similar patterns and integrates it into language cognition. When learners are aware of the similarities and differences between target language and first language, it increases their metalinguistic ability and fosters effective language acquisition. Further, this chapter exclusively focuses on how this integrative thinking helps the learners to transfer the first language writing skills to second language writing in order to identify the thinking processes integrated in writing.
