Vernacular Heat-Resilient Cities in Hot-Humid Climates: Exploring Solutions and Strategies for Bushehr, Iran

The concept of “heat-resiliency” has recently gained significant attention in research, though historical communities have long adapted to environmental and climatic conditions through practical and experimental wisdom. This study aims to extract heat-resilient design strategies from the historical urban fabric of Bushehr, Iran, at both the building and community levels. Bushehr is a historical city with a hot and humid climate located in the north of the Persian Gulf. Its urban fabric spans approximately three centuries and covers 38 hectares, including over 90 valuable historical houses. To achieve the research aim, data were collected from library sources and from old and new maps and images of Bushehr’s historical fabric. A framework of strategies, components, and solutions to improve heat resiliency in this historical context was developed through content analysis and logical reasoning. This framework addresses three scales: macro (morphology and general appearance of the fabric), meso (blocks and urban network), and micro (building architecture and details). Key solutions identified include compactness, the orientation of the fabric and urban network, enclosure, intersections, block size and permeability, central courtyards, semi-open spaces such as Tarameh and Shanashir, design and proportions of openings and shades, color and thermal capacity of materials, and greenery in courtyards. This research can inform the planning and design of new urban settlements, particularly in hot and humid areas, to adopt heat-resiliency policies in urban planning and architecture.
