This chapter examines the characteristics of Chinese mainstream media’s coverage of ASEAN, focusing on the evolving patterns and key themes in news representation. The analysis is divided into two main sections. First, it explores the characteristics of ASEAN-related coverage at different stages, identifying how shifts in China-ASEAN relations, regional developments, and geopolitical changes influence media narratives. Second, the chapter analyzes how different ASEAN countries are portrayed in Chinese media, revealing variations in coverage based on political, economic, and cultural factors. By comparing reporting trends across ASEAN member states, the study highlights media preferences, dominant narratives, and underlying framing strategies. Using topic modeling and sentiment analysis, this chapter provides empirical insights into how ASEAN is represented in Chinese mainstream media. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the role of media in shaping regional perceptions and international discourse, offering a nuanced perspective on China-ASEAN relations in the public sphere.
