Departing from how Syrian refugees portray the realities they encounter, Chapter 8 offers insights into their expectations and hopes for Syria’s future governance structure. Depending on people’s worldviews, beliefs, and experiences, there was a lag between Syria’s foreseen and envisioned future. What shaped interviewees’ view of the future was determined by the kind of past they focused on. The past perceptions are linked to the present articulation of refugees’ future expectations and visions, especially in discussions about the post-Asad period. The analysis showed that there were different streams of ideas regarding the foreseen and envisioned political governance of Syria that ranged from religious-based governance to democracy. The political governance section in this chapter will examine what refugees consider possible political structures after Asad. As a new governing structure emerged after 2024, the findings in this chapter may shed some light on the new era with the elaboration of potential advantages and disadvantages.
