Design Intervention and Entrepreneurship for Societal Change: A Case Study of Mukke-ka-Kaam
摘要
This research highlights the transformative influence of design intervention and entrepreneurship in societal changes, focusing on Mukke-ka-Kaam (Mukke-ka-kaam, a type of embroidery in Rajasthan that uses extensively the gold and silver threads to make the fabrics attractive and beautiful), the traditional metal embroidery of Barmer District in Rajasthan. Design intervention marries tradition and modernity in a way that not only makes the craft appealing to contemporary consumers but also gives a new lease of life to Mukke-ka-Kaam. This paper explores at how the traditional craftsmanship of Mukke-ka-Kaam can be rejuvenated with the flavor of contemporary design elements and what the socio-economic impacts on local communities and broader cultural contexts are. A field-based approach helped to guide the integration of modern elements with traditional techniques through focused group discussions and personal interviews with the application of design thinking methodologies. Socio-economic analysis and market research guided the sustainable economic development strategies. Expected results: empowered artisans with design and entrepreneurial education, increased market demand, and improved economic opportunities positioning Mukke-ka-Kaam as a center for excellence in maintaining traditional crafts and building community resilience. The Mukke-ka-Kaam case has portrayed society’s changes under design intervention and entrepreneurship. This is a potent testimony to the transformational potential of responsible design practices in enabling positive societal change, empowering communities, and safeguarding cultural legacies.
