The state of Kerala is gifted with a unique landscape intertwined with crisscrossing waterways. Before independence, canals were the predominant mode of transportation and irrigation throughout Kerala. However, as roads and railroads advanced, the significance of waterways began to decline and the canal systems started getting disrupted. The study delves into the traditional backwater canals in Kuttanad’s cultural and ecological elements to establish their significance and present a case for the conservation of the same. Specifically, as a potential tool for mitigating the recurring flood crisis and waterlogging. Apart from transportation and irrigation, the construction and maintenance of these traditional water canals have layers of historic context, engineering ingenuity, and cultural practice attached to them. Historically, this interconnected network of water systems was used to the advantage of humans, expanding and altering them for agricultural practices, flood control and water management. These water canals and associated agricultural and trade-related landscapes have their unique knowledge system that leveraged the harsh monsoons to increase the agricultural productivity and resilience of the area. Field study, archival data for historic maps, satellite (GIS) mapping to understand present conditions, interviews and secondary data has been employed to bring forth the ecology and culture of the region. The findings contribute to a better understanding of improving resilience and flood mitigation strategies, emphasizing the importance of preserving and adapting traditional water canals as integral components in Kerala’s sustainable development. The study establishes how canals (natural and manmade) have played a huge role in shaping the community’s identity and need to be preserved to retain the same.
