Twenty-first century product developers need firstly to meet customer requirements and then to look beyond the customer to benefit society, environment, and the globe from a broader perspective. Philosophers and thinkers of the twenty-first century inquired deeper into design practices and proposed many radically new concepts. The picture that emerges can be described in two distinctly recognisable fields—Design Field and Application Field. Interaction between these two is crucial and generates vital design inputs. Understanding the application field demands knowledge of other sciences like economics, psychology, sociology, etc. The primary constituents of the applications fields are market, customer, ‘beyond customer’, i.e. people, society, and environment. The new industry paradigms are Innovation Rate, Deep Tech, ESG compliance, and Effective Altruism. A new scheme, called the Simon Design Engine (SDE) is proposed. SDE, a perpetual virtual machine with modern philosophies at its core, connects all attributes and functions and helps the designer to progress the design systematically. In this proposal, SDE remains hidden and operates through various methods and techniques. All functions of SDE are embedded into well-defined and systematically sequenced process steps from evolving the system requirements to validation of the design. The sequence is DCCD (Define, Configure, Connect, Design). Several modern design methods are listed. These methods are required at various stages of the DCCD process. Finally, it is concluded that the proposed scheme aligns with the objectives of the 5th Industrial Revolution (Industry 5.0) which promotes human-centric, sustainable, and environment-friendly product development. A good scope exists for automating the SDE using AI algorithms.

摘要
