A Preliminary Review of Foundation Courses in Design Education of India

Foundation studies have been considered important for creative educational pursuits. However, the challenges that foundation study faces while being adopted to evolving contexts needs to be addressed and this article contributes a methodical review and recommendations based on survey of ten foundation study programs in India. In this article, there shall be an emphasis on understanding the philosophy of foundation studies in design education and how are Foundation studies different in this field? The papers shall cover a brief history of how and when the foundation studies began. The method of enquiry or methodology shall be of that which shall include Foundation framework of 10 different colleges with different specializations within design education and understand the lapse and inherent need for constant upgradation and acknowledge its effectiveness within the course. Since materials exhibit a close relation with foundation, a brief on the same shall be discussed in terms of usage, availability and practicality. Clarity shall be gained on aspects that iterate the uniqueness of specific courses and the existence of repetitive courses, its validity or validity in question. In this light the motivation of this article is to explore if there could be a common minimum that could be standardized as foundation studies within design learning for later curricular structures depending on the streams of choice open for the students.
