Mask making art is an age-old tradition of many countries around the globe including India. In Assam, mask was first used in Bhaona, the traditional folk theatre of Assam. Although traditional mask making craft is practised in certain places of Assam, it is mainly concentrated in Majuli. This craft has been sustaining over five hundred years. It is practised by the local craftsmen, and they transfer this traditional knowledge to their next generation in their own residences or in some Satra in informal ways. To see how the new generation considers the traditional mask making process, a study was conducted among design students. As a part of the study, a workshop was organised where established artists from Majuli practically trained the participants how to make mask using organic materials. After the workshop, a questionnaire was distributed among the participants to study their perspective towards this traditional craft before attending the workshop and after attending the workshop. Analysing the data, it is seen that the participants were more interested in reinventing this whole process and innovating design products.
