Impact of AI Art on Artists and Perception of Visual Generative AI: A Systematic Literature Review
摘要
Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based image generators have become increasingly popular in the last 3 years and have transformed the artistic space. The development of Generative AI (GenAI) has been rapid and continues to develop at an unprecedented pace. Artificial Intelligence (AI) art refers to images generated via GenAI utilizing machine learning and datasets. It generates images by processing data from a dataset of images and detects patterns to create imagery. From supporting research, it is observed that AI-generated images are becoming increasingly difficult to differentiate from human-made artworks. While professionally trained artists remain in their positions in industries, GenAI has been increasingly utilized for personal use and in industries in place of human-made artwork. This brings concern over how human artists are impacted by the shift of industries toward AI. Another major concern is artworks made by human artists being used in datasets without the consent of the artist, which often infringes the copyright of artists as well as plagiarizes their work. Understanding that further investigation into the domain of AI art is of absolute importance for the current and future times, this research is a further investigation into the same. This study adopts the methodology of a systematic literature review to understand how this development of generative visual art has impacted artists. It first explores how machine learning generates images, then tries to review how it affects artists, and finally, how people perceive it. The research also aims to find the extent to which the change has impacted the artists’ environment. Further, the paper discusses implications and scenarios that could happen in due time given the current state of affairs so that this research can serve as a reference point for future policies regarding AI image generation, and artists continuing original content generation. There is also a small discussion on the recent emergence of counter AI social media app, “Cara.”
