Design Evaluation and Perception of Kiosk: A Case Study of Kiosks in Patia, Bhubaneswar
摘要
In an attempt to generate employment and cater to the economically weaker section, government agencies across India have created vending zones across cities to formalize the vending activities. This has led to a huge growth in the number of vending clusters in the absence of formal design guidelines and regulations. Our preliminary research revealed an opportunity to discuss and develop design parameters for kiosks. Thus, this research investigates the design and the perception of the vendors of public shopping kiosks. The study focuses on evaluating the kiosks based on parameters such as materials, functionality, thermal comfort, lighting, esthetics, volumetric analysis, ease of construction, and cost-effectiveness. Employing a multi-faceted approach, the research analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the kiosks, identifying both their positive contributions and existing challenges. This comprehensive evaluation provides valuable insights for improving the design and user experience of future public spaces, ultimately fostering a more vibrant and user-friendly urban environment. To develop a better understanding, a case study of shopping kiosks in and around Patia, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, was considered. The methodology includes design format analysis (DFA) to create a comprehensive multi-criteria table to best understand the key indicators and how they impact the livability and workability of such kiosks. To supplement the research, a user survey was conducted for all the vendors of the selected kiosks to get insights into their perceptions of the built space. This opened up an option of using the principle of co-designing these spaces with the help of the stakeholders. The outcome of this chapter includes prescriptive suggestions for improving the living and workability of the existing kiosks. Based on the findings, the administrative bodies can plan future kiosks to provide better and more responsive designs.
