Promoting Sustainability in Product Packaging Through the Use of Additive Manufacturing and Artificial Intelligence in Industry 4.0
摘要
Product packaging is a barrier system designed to protect a product from external factors in transportation, storage, and distribution, starting at the manufacturing level. Consumers view packaging as a mechanism that makes their product accessible, tamper-proof, and ensures quality. For brands, packaging is a means to carry forward their visual identity, creating a tangible marketing strategy for new or existing products that reinforce brand values. Research highlights that packaging plays a pivotal role in acquiring new customers and even repeat consumers with premium packaging, aiding in brand loyalty. About 74% of the younger generation (18–25 years of age) share packaging images on social media if they are intrigued by the messaging or the design choices, thus boosting brand exposure [1]. Packaging thus shapes consumer behavior, brand perception and plays a crucial role in the viability of products in the market. However, changing consumer preferences and a growing concern for sustainability drive a transition towards packaging solutions that minimise environmental impact. Production methods also play a role in the wastage of resources. The choice of packaging materials and manufacturing techniques thus becomes a point of concern for the conscious consumer. This shift has prompted the exploration of eco-friendly packaging alternatives that align with these evolving consumer demands [1]. This research paper aims to explore the role of Additive Manufacturing and Artificial Intelligence as agents of change for driving sustainable packaging in the era of Industry 4.0.
