A Design Thinking Approach to Lifesaving Education Through Augmented Reality

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are one of the major health crises in our country as, per the WHO report, approximately one-fifth of the 17.9 million heart attack-related deaths worldwide occur in India. It raises challenges due to the lack of awareness and training facilities to acquire education on first aid for individuals from non-medical backgrounds in India. Reports establish that only 2% of Indians can execute Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which is very deficient according to global standards. Despite living in the digital age, post-pandemic, misconceptions about health issues persist. This study aims to emphasize the imperative of providing accurate information to the public. Employing the “design thinking” process, the research empathizes with the user group which consists of people above the age of 18 years, identifies shortcomings through user research, and acknowledges their preferences. The ensuing analysis led to the conceptualization of a mobile application to encourage individuals to acquire crucial lifesaving knowledge. This involved a comparative analysis, iterative revisions of user interfaces, and refining information architecture before testing the basic prototype. The findings revealed that people recognize the importance of such knowledge but prefer learning at their own pace with minimal cognitive load. This insight directed the adoption of augmented reality to create an interactive learning environment, employing engaging methods such as storytelling and gamification psychology. Recognizing the evolution of computing and technology, leveraging these advancements for healthcare and education can significantly impact accessibility and make learning more efficient for the population.
