Over the years, urban flooding has become more frequent and destructive, with a huge socioeconomic impact on the cities. Rapid urbanisation has led to cities engulfing the green belt and wetlands by converting these natural green pockets into built forms. These green belts and wetlands act as a refuge space or water reservoir for excess runoff during heavy rainfall, floods, or other natural calamities. Spatial planning of cities is designed based on the future projection of population along with many principles like topography, demographics, hydrology, land-use pattern, etc. However, due to the exponential demand for real estate, people and developers start to sprawl in these green or buffer areas as per their convenience. Lack of strict implementation of regulations/bylaws, economy, and proximity to the city are a few other factors that heighten the growth of sprawling in these areas. It also explores the cause and impact of urban flooding on the socioeconomic structure of the city. The present paper encompasses a survey of scholarly works utilising the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach and aims to define the parameters for the representation of urban flood-vulnerable areas of a city and convey the risk associated with those areas. With the help of GIS mapping, these parameters can predict urban flooding. It also focuses on creating a framework through which this information can be used in a mobile app to disseminate the real-time urban flood vulnerability to stakeholders such as land owners/buyers, architects, realtors, or builders, thus creating a more resilient society. The findings of this research paper can be used and replicated in various other cities in India to improve the understanding of urban floods and to develop resilient spatial planning for the cities.
