This chapter introduces the Engaged Engineering and Technological Fields (EETF) program. I proposed the program in 2017, which has since seen significant development with growing interest by Latin American academics and activists. It became clear that the program addresses crucial research gaps, such as bridging STS’s theories with the micro-agency of EETF streams and addressing the manufactured invisibilities in the STS North/South asymmetries. The concept of EETF refers to sociotechnical movements and initiatives, or streams, that consider themselves agents of transformation. The whats, whys, and hows of such transformation ideals and practices are at the program’s heart. The chapter summarizes the substantial advancements and original ideas introduced by the program, its theoretical, empirical, and value-based foundations, and its historical background. The EETF concept challenges conventional engineering by addressing various forms of exclusion in science, technology, and innovation. The differences within the streams are analyzed using a map of directions of social change. One of our crucial assumptions is that sociotechnical inclusion is necessary but insufficient for advancing to other possible worlds. To step forward, we provide an empowering framework for sociotechnical interventions.
