Ocular chemical injuries are true ophthalmic emergencies that require immediate and intensive intervention to minimize severe complications and profound visual loss [1, 2]. Improvements in the understanding of the pathophysiology of chemical injuries, as well as advancements in ocular surface reconstruction, have provided hope for patients who would otherwise have had a dismal visual prognosis. The major sight-threatening complications in the acute stage include corneal persistent epithelial defects (PED), stromal scarring, and corneal perforation. Chronic sequelae include limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), symblepharon formation, and glaucomatous changes. Various management strategies exist to mitigate the severity of acute and chronic disease. This chapter details those strategies and discusses novel therapies in ocular chemical injuries.
