The City of Mannheim’s management framework incorporates the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a significant way, demonstrating the city’s dedication to social and environmental advancement. Mannheim began implementing a comprehensive plan in 2015 that promoted sustainable development and emphasized the significance of striking a balance between social, environmental, and economic advancement. In order to localize the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, Mayor Kurz launched a thorough citizen participation process in 2018. This process resulted in the creation of the Mannheim 2030 strategy, which was developed in conjunction with locals. The effective alignment of local initiatives with global efforts to achieve the SDGs, as well as the promotion of international comparability and knowledge exchange, remain significant challenges. In response, Mannheim unveiled the 2022 annual report (VLR), establishing the VLR as a management tool that is crucial for guiding local policy and actions in addition to being a reporting tool. In order to further ensure accountability, transparency, and a comprehensive approach to sustainable development, this report—which will be released annually—complements the city’s mission statement, target systems, municipal budget plans, and a list of ongoing projects. Mannheim hopes to make a significant contribution to the global SDG agenda while customizing solutions for its distinct urban setting by fusing local action with global frameworks. In Part 1, the initiative is related to all the SDGs, and in Part 2, the initiative/project is related to SDGs 3, 11, and 13.
