Alternative energy sources have drawn a lot of interest for energy security due to rising global energy demand and the depletion of fossil resources. A sustainable, economically viable biorefinery concept has a lot of potential for producing renewable biofuel and value-added byproducts from the variety biomass feedstock. However, a specific feedstock biomass is essential for the biorefinery process to convert biomass into biofuels, but this feedstock is seasonally accessible. The economic sustainability of a biorefinery using a single feedstock is currently not considered feasible, due to the irregular feedstock availability which hider large-scale biofuel production. Therefore, co-feedstock biorefinery would be sustainable with cost-effective processes which can effectively utilize diverse feedstocks. Furthermore, the appropriate co-feedstock combination in the supply chain is necessary for a sustainable and economically viable biorefinery. The current status of the co-feedstock biorefinery for the production of biofuels and value-added byproducts along with insights into future prospective and challenges of co-feedstocks biorefinery is covered in this chapter.
