From Seed to Seedling: Impact of ZnO Nano-Priming to Enhance Seed Vigour and Stress Tolerance
摘要
With the erratic change in climatic conditions, plants are frequently subjected to biotic and abiotic stress, reducing growth and performance due to the inhibition of various vital life processes. The modern nanotechnology technique is revolutionizing the agricultural sector by enhancing the plant’s physiological and biological processes while modulating stress response. Using nanoparticles for seed priming activates the metabolic process during the early phase of germination, thereby increasing the rate of germination and emergence, thus helping ensure seeds’ sustainability during various stresses. Zinc is an essential micronutrient that plays a vital role in plants’ metabolic processes and is a critical component of more than 300 plant enzymes and proteins: important for maintaining membrane integrity, gene expression, protein synthesis and detoxification under normal and stressful conditions. Farmers’ over application of zinc fertilizers in the form of zinc sulphates is limiting as the plants are hindered from zinc uptake due to their lower solubility in the soil. As a result, ZnO nano-priming will solve such problems and enhance the Zn content in seeds for better seedling vigour, growth, yield and stress tolerance.
