Deposition of SiO2 Nanoparticles Mixed Polystyrene Layers on Aluminum by Drop Casting and Investigation of Their Corrosion Behavior in 0.5 M NaCl
摘要
This work assesses the potential of SiO2 nanoparticles (SONPs) embedded in polystyrene (PS) coatings to slow down the corrosion of Aluminium (Al) in 0.5 M sodium chloride. First, the PS is dissolved in chloroform, and then its layers are deposited on Al through drop casting. Later on, SONPs have been added in different (2–6 mg) amounts to PS. The coated Al samples are checked for hydophobicity by water contact angle (WCA) measurements. Afterwards, the coated Al samples have been tested for corrosion by open circuit potential (OCP), Tafel polarization (TP), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results have confirmed that PS layers, without and with SONPs, significantly prevent Al in NaCl. However, the best performance is obtained for 3 layers of PS (89%, TP) and 3 layers of PS + SONPs (94%, TP). The surface examination is executed by optical microscopy (OM), which shows that damage to PS and PS + SONPs-coated Al in NaCl is less than that to bare Al.
