Chapter 4 addresses the role ontology plays in renewing the critique. The argument assumes that it is in moments of crisis that the mobilisation of ontological thinking occurs, not only to diagnose it but also to stimulate the imagination and transcend the crisis. The ontological turn in the philosophy of higher education is then discussed. Ontology appears here as a means of overcoming the crisis resulting from the expansion of instrumental reason within the university and the crisis of critical thinking stemming from the primacy of epistemology. The ontological attempt to renew critical thinking is then confronted with how ontology appears in Marxist thought. Chapter 4 argues that the tool of political ontology derived from Marx is better equipped for the task of renewing critique. This is because it gives account to a different ontological order—the common—allowing not only to diagnose the crisis of the university but also to transcend it.
