Chapter 3 traces the concept of integral critique back to Marx’s critique. Hence, it builds on the argument that the renewal of critique and transcending its crisis is possible once the principles of Marx’s project are exposed. It is in his work that intervening in a crisis through the means of critique is not about resolving the crisis by integrating it into the existing order. Critique situates itself at the limit of the crisis, bringing it to its ultimate consequences, and initiating something beyond the status quo. This particular relation between crisis and critique is then further developed by introducing the ‘In-Against-Beyond’ figure to express the Marxian understanding of critique as a movement between distinct moments of the critique. Chapter 3 closes by translating each of the distinct moments into its role in intervening in the university crisis and reflecting on the logic of the movement within the ‘In-Against-Beyond’ figure.
