Chapter 1 sets the stage for the aim of the whole book, which is to develop Marxist critique as a means of intervening in the university in crisis. This task is carried out in two interconnected movements. First, it outlines the contours of the university crisis by linking it to the intensification of capital’s presence in the sector. Drawing on the Marxist understanding, it presents capital as a totality that structures social relations within the sector. Second, it examines the relation between crisis and critique. Although critique is seen as a means of intervening in a crisis, today it finds itself in crisis. Thus, the task of developing a critique capable of intervening in the crisis requires resolving the crisis of critique itself. This becomes possible when critique regains its integrity, becoming a movement within its three moments—‘In-Against-Beyond’. The chapter concludes with a book content’s overview.
