A Comprehensive Review on Battery Thermal Management System for Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicle (EV) battery thermal management systems (BTMSs) are essential to ensuring the best possible performance, effectiveness, and safety. This abstract provides a concise overview of the key aspects and advancements in BTMS for EVs, highlighting the significance of thermal management in battery systems. The abstract begins by emphasizing the increasing demand for EVs and the critical role of battery technology in their success. It acknowledges the inherent challenges associated with battery temperature control, such as temperature variations during charging and discharging cycles, which can impact the battery’s performance and lifespan. This study explores various BTMS techniques and strategies employed to mitigate the thermal issues in EV batteries. These include liquid cooling, air cooling, phase change materials, heat pipes, and thermoelectric cooling. Hybrid cooling approaches provide flexibility in managing heat dissipation and temperature control in EV battery packs. Further, it discusses the benefits and drawbacks of each technique, considering factors such as cost, energy consumption, and effectiveness. This article presents a thorough analysis of recent research and developments in the field of BTMS for EVs. It highlights the studies focused on thermal management control algorithms such as temperature sensing and monitoring, thermal modeling, predictive control, and improving the overall efficiency of BTMS. It also recognizes the significance of safety considerations, including thermal runaway prevention and fire suppression mechanisms, to ensure the reliable and secure operation of EV batteries.
