The relationship between social housing and environmental impact is inherently complex, necessitating a multifaceted approach that intertwines socio-economic needs with environmental sustainability and robust policy frameworks. As urbanization accelerates, the demand for affordable housing rises sharply; however, this urgency must not compromise environmental integrity or social welfare. Consequently, there is a compelling need for a paradigm shift in the conceptualization and delivery of social housing initiatives. This study conducts a comprehensive analysis of the environmental impacts of social housing, addressing the research gap between social and environmental aspects. It examines how social housing can fulfill residents’ needs while promoting ecological sustainability and aligning social equity with environmental health. The research aims to enhance understanding of social housing’s role in mitigating environmental degradation and prioritizing community welfare. The research presents some key policy recommendations. First, policymakers and stakeholders must recognize social housing not merely as a remedy for housing deficits but as a pivotal element in the broader socio-environmental context. To achieve this, future policies should prioritize integrated approaches that encompass the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of housing initiatives. Incorporating welfare analysis into policy planning is crucial to ensure that the impacts on health, education, and economic well-being are taken into account. Policymakers should also focus on promoting sustainable social housing by adopting practices that include renewable energy sources, water-efficient appliances, and effective waste reduction and recycling programs. Moreover, the environmental challenges posed by social housing call for the integration of innovative technologies and sustainable building practices, coupled with an emphasis on community engagement. By fostering collaboration, innovation, and a shared vision, societies can cultivate a social housing system that meets citizen needs while safeguarding ecological health. This holistic approach will balance immediate housing demands with long-term ecological goals, setting the trajectory for sustainable urban development that benefits both people and the planet.
