Medical Management of Obesity and Guidelines for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery
摘要
Obesity is a global health issue with increasing prevalence in both developing and developed nations. Obesity is a chronic relapsing condition characterized by abnormal or excessive body fat accumulation that impairs health, resulting in many complications, especially cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, stroke, and heart failure, among others. Management of obesity should be multidisciplinary with lifestyle modification (intensive behavioral therapy and medical nutrition therapy) as a foundation for all therapies. Lifestyle modification plays a crucial role in the treatment of obesity across various grades, which is followed by pharmacotherapy, endoscopic procedures, and/or metabolic/bariatric surgery. By synthesizing current research and clinical expertise, this chapter serves as a valuable resource for healthcare professionals navigating the intricate landscape of obesity management and surgical intervention.
