Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is a recognized, effective treatment option for people living with severe and complex obesity, resulting in an improvement in obesity-related comorbidities. All metabolic and bariatric surgery procedures impact on nutritional intake, with the altered anatomy affecting the absorption of micronutrients and macronutrients to varying degrees. The malabsorptive procedures, which include the biliopancreatic diversion, duodenal switch, single-anastomosis duodenoileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy, and one anastomosis gastric bypass, have the greatest impact on protein, fat, and micronutrient absorption. The multidisciplinary team plays an essential role in preoperative assessment and preparation and postoperative management given the increased risk of protein malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. It is essential that patients have access to robust long-term support and monitoring from a skilled and experienced multidisciplinary team after these procedures.
