The use of non-aqueous media in the chemical fiber dyeing and washing processes has become common due to the current problem of water scarcity. The textile sector uses up to 9 trillion gallons of water to produce 60 billion kilograms of fabric yearly, making it one of the biggest global contributors to environmental hazards. More specifically, large volumes of wastewater are produced by the global textile wet processing sector, and their release into the environment could have a negative impact on drinking water and aquatic life. A lot of unfixed dyes flow into water bodies during the dyeing process, and around 10 and 15% of the dye is lost as waste and finds its way into the environment. In addition, concerns about the environment and public health are raised by the standard textile dyeing procedures, which require a lot of energy, water, and auxiliaries rather than producing a lot of harmful effluents. Using heavy metal salts as mordants in the conventional natural dyeing process is not only hazardous for the environment but also a difficult method of controlling color stability; as a result, the procedure is not appropriate for large-scale manufacturing. Therefore, a waterless, environmentally friendly, sustainable textile dyeing method is appealing. This chapter focuses on the waterless dyeing procedures and several mechanisms of these dyeing methods. This chapter will cover recent advancements in waterless dyeing that can lower unfixed color loads in wastewater using different dyeing techniques, including plasma-induced dyeing, supercritical fluid (carbon dioxide) dyeing, ultrasonic wave-assisted dyeing, solvent dyeing, and many more.
