With the rapid development of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), improving energy efficiency and extending network lifespan are key priorities. The LEACH (Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy) protocol has been a fundamental method in hierarchical routing due to its adaptive clustering features. However, various adaptations have been introduced to overcome its limitations. This review paper examines different LEACH-based protocols, including enhancements like the Modified LEACH (MODLEACH), which features advanced cluster head selection algorithms and energy-efficient transmission methods and focuses on the use of a new energy efficient model (NEW-LEACH) to minimize energy utilization of nodes. Comparative analyses show that these improvements enhance network lifespan, lower energy consumption, and boost overall performance. This survey offers a thorough review of clustering methods, routing protocols, and their future implications for WSNs.
