Effect of Screw Speed Extruder Variation on Impact Strength, Physical Properties and Thermal Properties of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene and Microcrystalline Cellulose Composites

Extrusion is one of the methods of polymer processing with filler, which therefore disperses filler inside the polymer. Distinct speed indicates distinct behavior of filler dispersion. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of screw speed on the twin screw extruder of ABS with MCCC as the filler. The manufacturing of ABS and MCC is 96% ABS and 4% MCC. Different speed screws were used in this study: 10 rpm, 15 rpm, and 20 rpm. The results show the highest bending strength at 10 rpm for 68,08 MPa and Tg at 126 C based on the DSC test. It is evidence that increasing the screw speed makes the composite-site can’t mix well. Furthermore, micrograph observations by SEM revealed that increasing the speed of the screw extruder increased the voids on composite ABS/MCC, which decreased the strength of the bending test. It is because the MCC can’t be mixed with ABS, which shows that more voids (debonding) are formed in the ABS/MCC composite as the extruder speed increases.
