Illuminating the Path to Sustainable Tomorrow with Solar Energy

Solar energy plays a vital role in the modern era, especially due to the importance of renewable energy. Unlike finite fossil fuels like coal and crude oil, solar energy can be collected without depleting natural resources. The utilization of solar energy has multiple pros and a few cons; therefore, it can act as a method via which we can achieve a sustainable tomorrow. Solar energy helps us reduce our dependency on fossil fuels (Pollutants), and it also helps us reduce the overall emission of greenhouse gases which helps us mitigate climate change. Technological advancements continue to drive efficiency improvements and cost reductions in solar technology. The inception of solar energy utilization dates back to approximately the seventh century BC, when ancient civilizations used a simple magnifying glass to converge solar rays, thereby generating sufficient heat to start a fire. A few decades later, solar energy was used to heat bathhouses and homes in extreme conditions. Solar energy was also used to heat water for domestic use in ancient cultures, working on the same principle Clarence Kemp developed the first commercial water heater. Recent advances include concentrating solar power technology which generate electricity by producing steam to drive a turbine. Russel Ohl was the scientist who played a pivotal role in the transition of solar cell technology by using silicon instead of selenium wafers. The efficiency of the first silicon solar cell was around 6% but with the help of advancing technology, the latest solar cell has an efficiency of about 47.6%. Today, solar energy is being utilized not just for energy generation but also in innovative ways like the production of hydrogen fuel by a solar-powered electrolyzer and the treatment of wastewater by solar detoxification and solar disinfection.
