Micro- and Nanoplastics: Its Impact on Antarctica and Similar Ecosystems

Antarctica is known as a pure and unspoiled continent. Now, this continent is becoming damaged day by day through plastic pollution. Current studies state that this untouched continent contains micro- and nanoplastics. Those studies’ outcome concerns the region’s isolated location and its well-known status of being unaltered (Bhardwaj 2023). The Antarctic Treaty System (ATS) has focused its research on the challenge of plastic pollution since the 1980s and is actively involved in the estimation of plastic contaminants. Plastics are divided into mesoplastics (5 to <25 mm), microplastics (1 to <5 mm), and macroplastics (≥25 mm) (Lee et al. 2013; Bhardwaj and Sharma 2021; Bhardwaj 2022a). These materials undergo degradation by chemical, physical, and biological processes (Alimi et al. 2018), resulting in the creation of smaller fragments that are now widely present in nature, including in the seas, soil, and sediments of Antarctica (Bhardwaj 2022b). Although plastic/microplastic pollution is widespread, extensive research on this issue is lacking in polar locations (Obbard 2018).
