GIS-Based Approach for Vulnerability Assessment of the Puri Coast, Odisha, India

The coastal areas are quite inventive and vibrant. Coastal regions are already under pressure from anthropogenic activities, pollution, exotic species, and storms. Climate change also threatens these areas, which have made it more important than ever to analyze the vulnerability of coastal areas. The goal of this work is to create a coastal vulnerability index (CVI) for the Puri administrative units in the state of Odisha. In this study, one of the socio-economic parameters called “population” was used along with seven other physical and geologic risk variables that characterize the vulnerability of the coast, including rate of relative sea level change, historical shoreline change, coastal slope, coastal regional elevation, mean tidal range and significant wave height. Over the course of around 96 km, from Ramachandi beach to Chandrabhaga beach, it was noticed that the shoreline had undergone considerable changes. However, there are fewer variations from Golden Beach to Ramachandi beach, a distance of around 29.4 km. The coastline consists of 30 km classified as low vulnerability and 96 km classified as high vulnerability. The beaches of Ramachandi and Chandrabhaga, fall under moderate and high significant risk categories, respectively, and all other locations between Golden beach to Ramachandi beach are classified as low risk.
