Building Information Modelling (BIM) has undergone extensive research and refinement over the past few decades. However, despite the growing practical demands, its on-site application rates remain low. This study explores the optimal approach for advancing BIM in bridge construction in India by identifying the barriers to its adoption from the perspectives of experienced users and industry experts. A questionnaire survey has been distributed to construction professionals to gather data on current practices, demands, and factors influencing BIM implementation in bridge projects. The survey findings have been evaluated and compared to provide preliminary data for a future global expert session. The results indicate that the primary barriers to BIM adoption in bridge construction include a lack of government incentives, research and development support, policies, regulations and standards, Absence of appropriate guidelines, Lack of digital communication skills among agents, Product complexity, and Resistance to changing the current construction industry culture are the ranked top five hurdles to implement BIM in bridge industry. Additionally, interoperability and the lack of standardised practices are significant concerns. Moreover, the study provides valuable insights into the challenges of BIM adoption in bridge construction, enabling the construction industry to address these issues effectively. It is a significant reference for countries and regions involved in bridge construction and contributes to the broader body of knowledge on BIM for bridge construction.
