In this chapter, Yang examines the figure of Han Han in popular culture, offering a critical perspective on both his blog and literary output. While Han Han (b. 1982) is often seen as a provocative voice of his generation, Yang questions the depth and substance of his writings. Drawing upon selected online reader commentary as well as his own analysis to pinpoint the shortcomings of Han Han’s novel 1988, I Want to Talk with the World, Yang suggests that instead of presenting a real resistance to structures of power, Han Han’s writing lacks any true historical consciousness, moral conviction, or spiritual force.
