The work of information technology (IT) professionals is in significant demand on the world labor market. An integral component of their successful activity is communication in foreign languages (FL) as they often have to interact with customers and team members from other cultures. The FL training provided by universities is not always sufficient for effective communication since FL competences are gradually lost without regular and continuous upgrading. There is an active search for innovative pedagogical technologies that would ensure the continuity of FL training of university graduates. Modern digital technologies have a high potential in the field of FL self-study, as they offer a variety of convenient and affordable resources for language learning. To increase the level of students’ FL proficiency and their autonomy in language learning the department of foreign languages at Kharkiv National Automobile and Highway University designed an original digital course for prospective IT professionals which was implemented in the 2022–2023 academic year based on such a modern approach in language didactics as audiovisual translation. To prove the efficiency of the course the experiment was carried out aimed to compare achievements in English of two groups of learners: those who studied the digital FL course with those who studied in the traditional mode, and to reveal how the level of autonomy changed in both groups. The results of the experiment indicate the notable positive impact of audiovisual digital tools on the level of students’ language proficiency and autonomy that prepares them for continuous language learning.
