Sustainable Colouration Through Electrolysis: The Electrochemical Approach to Dyeing

This chapter discusses the advancements in electrochemical reduction as an innovative approach to sustainable dyeing in the textile industry. Traditional dyeing processes, often reliant on toxic chemicals, excessive water, and high energy consumption, are contrasted with electrochemical methods, which provide an eco-friendly alternative, particularly for vat and sulfur dyes in cellulosic textiles. The chapter explores the principles of direct and mediator-enhanced reduction, including electrocatalytic hydrogenation, where dyes react with in-situ hydrogen generated during water electrolysis. By addressing issues such as dyeability, fastness, and environmental sustainability, this chapter highlights the potential of electrochemical dyeing while acknowledging challenges like scalability, cost, and industrial adoption. It calls for further research into technical, economic, and environmental dimensions to realize the transformative potential of this technology for sustainable textile coloring.
