In this paper, I try to show from the textual analysis of the Sānkhyakārikā that puruṣa is pure consciousness without any trace of content. Classical Sānkhya’s conception of puruṣa is definitely not the res cogitans, the thinking substance, as the thinking happens in manas in Sānkhya, and manas is an evolute of prakṛti. Puruṣa is not a substance, as it does not seem to meet the criteria of substance. It does not have qualities, and it cannot act or move. It is pure witness. In fact, it is absolutely unchangeable. I make an attempt to map the nature of puruṣa as delineated in the Sānkhyakārikā and submit that the puruṣa is a contentless consciousness and it is entirely different from the ātman concept of Vedānta.

摘要
