Carbonate Tidal Channel Modeling Based on Geostatistical Simulation in W Olifield, Iraq

The sedimentary facies of the mB1 member of the Mishrif reservoir in the W oilfield are carbonate tidal channel depositions in the lagoon, which has huge development potential. According to core, logging, seismic data, and modern sedimentation patterns, this study clarifies the types and distributions of tidal channels and establishes a three-dimensional geological model using multi-point geostatistical methods. The results indicate that the sedimentary environment can be divided into three types of facies, including tidal channel, interchannel, and intra-platform point shoals. The tidal channels are mainly distributed in strips on the plane, while the point shoals are mainly distributed among the channels. There are obvious differences in the distribution scale of tidal channels in different sublayers. The mB1_c has the smallest distribution range of tidal channels but the largest range of point shoals. However, the mB1_a has the largest distribution range of tidal channels and the smallest range of point shoals. Different training images are established for different sedimentary characteristics and used for multi-point statistical geological modeling. The final models align more with geological characteristics, with a higher degree of agreement with well loggings. The matching rate of checking wells is greater than 85%, and the difference in facies fraction is less than 10%. This achievement can provide a reference for research on other similar oilfields in the Middle East.
