Resource Evaluation and Favorable Area Optimization of Shale Gas in Longmaxi Formation in Weiyuan Bloc

In order to find potential targets in Weiyuan block, three wells were drilled in the east in recent year. The dynamic data showed differences to the static evaluation. Under this situation, it is necessary to clarify the variation on reservoir between the estern area and the production areas. Only then can the distribution and optimization of reservoir be more clear, which can provide guidance for dividing development units and formulating development policies. In this paper, Wufeng Formation-Longmaxi Formation shale in Well H area, located in the east of the main structure of Weiyuan block, is selected as the research object. This study evaluates the structural characteristics based on drilling and seismic data, clarifies the morphological features and fractures, then identifies the palaeo-geomorphological features, as well as the distribution range of the palaeo-uplifts in this area. Also a comprehensive interpretation of the newly drilled wells was conducted, revealing the vertical evolution characteristics of reservoir parameters and the sweet spot sections. Through reservoir classification result, the paper clarifies the distribution of effective reservoir and it’s optimization. The results show that:(1) The Well H area has simple structures and gently dipping strata. (2) As to geomechanical characteristics, the stress state is relatively stable, and horizontal stress difference seems to be moderate, no deep large-scale fractures have been detected here, and the area is mainly developed conjugate natural fractures. (3) Compared to the production area, the overall thickness of high-quality shale in the Wufeng Formation-Longmaxi Formation in the the Well H area is reduced. The optimal box body (1 of S1l11 sub-member) thickness is thinned in the southern part of the east area due to the influence of the palaeo-uplift, resulting in a decrease in reservoir quality. On the other hand 2 to 3 of S1l11 sub-member have improved slightly, and the vertical differences is decreased, leading to a weakened “Barrier” effect and facilitating vertical reservoir utilization. (4) this area has advantages such as good fracture stability, relatively high porosity, and high pressure coefficient. In summary, the study believes that this area has the potential for single-well breakthroughs and the possibility of widespread successful replication of development wells based on its geological characteristic. This paper systematically analyzes the characterization of shale gas in the eastern area of Weiyuan Block from aspects of structure, stratigraphy and sedimentation, reservoir characteristics, and some other new understandings of geological features, revealing the distribution of high-quality reservoirs in the eastern Weiyuan, and selects a favorable development area of 138 km2. Those results can provide reference for the design of gas reservoir engineering schemes and the calculation of reserves.
