Net Zero Within the Built Environment

This chapter explores the imperative of achieving net-zero carbon emissions within the built environment, a sector that significantly contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions. As the impacts of climate change intensify, the construction industry is under pressure to transition toward sustainable practices that balance economic development with environmental responsibility. The chapter unpacks the complexities of decarbonising a carbon-intensive sector reliant on materials like steel and cement, and energy sources such as fossil fuels. It critically examines the concept of net zero, capital cost implications, carbon benchmarking, and the systemic challenges in offsetting emissions across construction lifecycles. Recognizing that the path to net zero is neither linear nor intuitive, it highlights the need for a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach that includes innovation, energy efficiency, and behavioural change. The chapter also discusses the role of carbon markets, offsets, and the ethical dimensions of carbon management. While acknowledging debates surrounding CO2’s role in climate change, it underscores the importance of reducing excess emissions and enhancing natural carbon sinks. Ultimately, the chapter advocates for a paradigm shift in construction practices one that sees the built environment not just as a consumer of resources but as a vital contributor to global climate action.
