PCA Framework for Sustainable Construction Management

This chapter introduces a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) framework for sustainable construction management, addressing the need to organise and interpret the complexity of critical success factors (CSFs) in global construction practices. Sustainable construction is increasingly prioritised, yet project outcomes often fall short due to fragmented tools and strategies. Through a survey of over 600 construction firms, 48 CSFs were identified and analysed using PCA to reduce dimensionality and group related variables. The analysis revealed nine key components: project management structure, procurement plan, environmental ethics, sustainable construction manager, company policy, information management, health and safety plan, digitalisation, and community engagement, explaining 80% of the total variance. The framework enhances systemic decision-making and provides a structured pathway for the successful implementation of sustainable construction across regions. It contributes to the philosophical and practical discourse by establishing sustainable construction management as a distinct discipline with dedicated methods and practices. The study’s findings offer valuable guidance for policymakers, educators, and industry stakeholders to align construction practices with sustainability goals. Despite sample size limitations, the results are generalizable and pave the way for confirmatory and comparative studies. This chapter ultimately serves as a decision-making and pedagogical tool for promoting global sustainable development in the built environment.
