Experimental Investigation of VG-30 Bitumen Modified with Industrial Waste Lignin

Neat bitumen acts as a binder in flexible pavements. It is not that effective and has some limitations during road applications. Therefore, modifiers are used to enhance asphalt properties. Thermoplastic elastomers and plastomers are some of the most widely used modifiers nowadays for bitumen modification. These modifiers are not easily available and are costly enough. That’s why in today’s time, waste products are being preferred for bitumen modification. In this research, Lignin has been used to improve the properties of bitumen, which is a waste material released from the paper manufacturing industry. Lignin is a plant-based substance available in two forms (liquid and pulp) having different chemical composition. In this study, 5%, 10%, 20%, 40% of liquid lignin and 3%, 6%, 9%, 12% of pulp lignin have been mixed with bitumen. Thereafter, various physical properties of neat and modified bitumen and mixes prepared with this bitumen were evaluated and compared. While comparing lignin-modified bitumen (PLMB) to liquid lignin-modified bitumen (LLMB), it was observed that bitumen containing pulp lignin causes significant changes in physical characteristics. It was observed that mixes [repaired with 20% liquid lignin and 6% pulp lignin exhibits better results compared to other mixtures types.
