Sustainable Building Construction Planning Using Multi-criteria Decision Making Approach

The Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry is characterized by intricate processes that depend on the specific nature and scope of each project. In recent years, significant advancements in this sector have led to both favorable and adverse effects on the environment and human well-being. Sustainable construction is regarded as one of the solutions to mitigate the adverse repercussions. Sustainable construction encompasses various facets, and, at times, the need arises for the application of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods to establish priorities among them. However, there is a dearth of investigations in this direction. Therefore, this study focused on developing a MCDM approach for building construction planning. To this end, questionnaire surveys were performed through experienced architects, construction professionals, and sustainable construction experts. MCDM techniques, such as the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Entropy, were employed for data analysis. The results highlighted that environmental factors such as ‘Environmental Health and Safety’ and ‘Climatic Conditions’ are important criteria and sub-criteria for sustainable buildings. Other criteria, such as ‘Building Resource and Reuse’ were considered less important. Sustainable construction practitioners should prioritize ‘Environmental Health and Safety’ factors and consider ‘Climatic Conditions’ in their planning. Whereas other factors, such as ‘Building Recourse and Reuse’ can be managed with the help of sophisticated construction management practices. The study results can be helpful for sustainable building designers, Architects, and construction professionals to develop a strategic plan using the MCDM approach.
