India has a very large network of roads used for transportation of people and goods. The total length is well above 6o lakh kilometres. The number of accidents reported are more than 1.5 lakh each year. The accidents result in deaths, serious injuries, property damages and as well have an economic cost involved. Proper auditing of roads can help in identification of road safety issues that will in turn prompt for right action in mitigating accidents. The present study investigates a major intersection of a NH -48 named as Radha chowk. It is located near to NICMAR University. The investigation of the highway intersection was carried out using the International road assessment programme (iRAP) methodology. In this methodology the road attributes are measured and compared with the international standards related to road safety. Based on the comparison, a combined rating is obtained for the road on a scale of 1 to 5. 1-Star roads have the highest risk and 5-Star roads the lowest risk. Star Ratings can be produced without reference to detailed crash data. The investigations reveal the star rating of the highway intersection as well as the risk on the road for the different road users. The findings of the study are the list of areas showing the safety risk for the road user. Further analysis reveals the needed measures to be undertaken to alleviate the safety risks thereby improving the start rating of the highway intersection. This case study will serve as a guide for analyzing several intersections and thereby minimizing safety risks on highway intersections and contribute in overall reduction of accidents on roads.
