Response of a Medium Rise Regular RC Building Under Near and Far Field Ground Motion

The goal of the current investigation is to examine how fixed base and non-isolated structures react to both far-field and near-field ground vibrations. Two finite-element models were created using SAP2000. One model was non-isolated, and the other was an isolated model. To observe the response of different ground motions on the structures, two ground motions were selected in such a way that the magnitude of the ground motions was the same, but near-field ground motion had high peak ground acceleration (PGA) and velocity (PGV), while low PGA and PGV are present in far-field earthquake. For both models, “nonlinear time history analysis” was carried out, and the responses in terms of storey displacements and total base shear have been discussed. Within the scope of this investigation, the response of the isolator to the two distinct time histories was also analysed and addressed. It was discovered that seismic isolation does not always increase the storey displacement. When compared to non-isolated buildings, the top-story displacement in isolated buildings subjected to far-field ground motion was shown to be lower.
