Integrated Simulation Modeling and Geospatial Analysis for Assessing Flood and Urban Heat Vulnerability

Urban centers in the Global South face substantial challenges as a result of climate change, necessitating strategic approaches for enhancing climate resilience. This chapter focuses on Thrissur, a rapidly urbanizing region in Kerala, India, presenting an integrated analysis framework for assessing flood and urban heat vulnerabilities and evaluating future climate change scenarios. This study used HEC-RAS for unsteady flow analysis to assess flood risk under various climate change scenarios, considering current and future land use and rainfall patterns. By simulating different flood occurrences, this hydraulic modeling technique aids in identifying high-risk locations and possible impact zones. Concurrently, this chapter integrates land-use data, urban characteristics, and multitemporal satellite images to investigate urban heat island (UHI) phenomena using advanced geospatial analysis tools. In conclusion, based on the results of flood risk modeling, urban heat island analysis, and climate change projections, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the vulnerabilities of Thrissur and culminates in strategic and informed decision-making.
